Photos from the trip to Tasmania...

Hi there, on the 29th of Nov, we left for Tasmania onboard the Spirit of Tasmania (ie boring, inequilibrium and poor technology ship), chugging across the Bass Straits towards the little island down under the Down Under. Luckily the days we spent there living in a cottage on the Brickendon farm estate were pretty fun and refreshing. Plus Jumbo went too! She was the weakest link, coz we have to accomodate her doggy needs wherever we go. Sigh... Here's some funny moments.

Hello there,
I am very surprised in your posting above that you have said “poor technology ship” I would like to know what you mean by this.
These particular ships (Ex Superfast III & IV) belong to a family of 12 Superfast ferries and to any one who knows any thing about ships would most certainly agree that these ships would have to be among the most sophisticated and most technologically advanced vessels in the world. At 29.000 tons + and have a service speed of about 28 knots but being able to achieve a speed of in excess 30 Knots. Back in 1995 when the Sprits predecessors (Ex Spirit III and her sister were built the technology was ground breaking stuff, being able to have such huge capacity and achieving such high speeds but yet with only a conventional hull and using only medium speed diesel engines was stuff other operators could only dream of. There are so many other things I could go on about it would take pages and pages. But most certainly not technologically poor in any sense.

P.S what dose inequilibrium mean ?

Best regards

It isn't about the speed. The overall experience is simply unsatisfactory. Australians should stop wallowing in their imaginary technological advancements. The world is passing you by. Seriously. To quote you some examples: poor public train system in Melb, trams? what a joke. Ticketing system onboard the trams? Even more a joke. If you have some spare time and money, please travel more to countries (or territories) such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. Then you will realise Australia is really stuck in the era circa late 80s to early 90s. Wake up mate!!!

Well perhaps so, but I never said Australians are ahead technology wise. But anyway I wasn’t talking about Australians as these ships remain almost untouched from their days operating in Europe, funnily enough as I mentioned earlier the technology used in these ships (ie hull form, sea keeping abilities etc etc) began what could be said to be a revolution in the ship building industry. But if you mean poor technology from a passenger prospective, well you can’t expect too much for an eleven hour trip, but certainly this is in line with any Ro/Pax ferry in Europe. Perhaps you need to go to the Baltic where the finest of fine cruise ferries operate, which set the benchmark for all cruise ferries.
Now you say that certain parts of Asia are ahead in there technology etc, which is true in there electrical and automotive area, but as we are talking about ships, the Japanese do make good solid ships but lately Greece have been buying former Japanese ferries but they don’t meet standards of the European people and also safety standards, so they need to convert them heavily, so not meeting technology of Europe. But anyway just my thoughts on the matter.
